Hyderabad Chanchalguda Prison Launches ‘Feel the Jail’ Experience for Citizens

Chanchalguda Central Prison in Hyderabad has launched a unique initiative called “Feel the Jail,” allowing ordinary citizens to experience prison life for 12 or 24 hours.

The programme aims to help the public understand the realities of incarceration, the importance of freedom, and the functioning of the prison system in India.

Under the initiative, participants can stay in specially designed prison cells, consume jail-style food, and follow routines similar to those followed by inmates.

Cost of the ‘Feel the Jail’ Experience

According to officials, the charges for the programme are:

  • Rs 2,000 for the 24-hour prison experience
  • Rs 1,000 for the 12-hour prison experience

The initiative has already gained widespread attention on social media, with many users expressing curiosity about voluntarily experiencing prison life.

Chanchalguda Jail Museum Opens in Hyderabad

Alongside the programme, authorities also inaugurated a new Jail Museum at the State Institute of Correctional Administration (SICA), Chanchalguda.

The museum showcases the evolution of prisons from the Nizam era to modern correctional practices.

The museum includes:

  • Historic prison cells and shackles
  • Stories of notable prisoners such as Bhakta Ramadasu and Dasarathi Krishnamacharyulu
  • Information about prison industries
  • Rehabilitation programmes for inmates
  • Contribution of prisoners to the construction of the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam

Inspired by Sangareddy Heritage Prison Museum

Officials stated that the Chanchalguda initiative was inspired by the earlier “one-day jail experience” at the Sangareddy Heritage Prison Museum, which had attracted significant public attention.

The Hyderabad version has been designed as a more organised and interactive experience for visitors.

Telangana Governor Inaugurates the Initiative

The programme and museum were inaugurated by Telangana Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla.

During the inauguration, the Governor described prisons as “centres of reform and transformation” and stated that a progressive society must focus not only on punishment but also on rehabilitation and second chances.

Prison DGP Soumya Mishra said the initiative marks a new chapter in Telangana’s correctional reforms and will help citizens better understand prison administration and inmate rehabilitation.

Objective Behind the Initiative

According to Telangana Prisons officials, the initiative is primarily aimed at:

  • Creating awareness about law and discipline
  • Educating citizens about prison life
  • Encouraging social responsibility among youth
  • Promoting understanding of rehabilitation and correctional systems

The authorities believe the programme can help people appreciate the value of freedom and understand the challenges faced by prisoners.

Public Reaction on Social Media

The Chanchalguda Jail Museum and “Feel the Jail” experience quickly went viral on social media platforms.

Many users reacted with curiosity and surprise at the idea of voluntarily spending a day inside a prison-like environment.

Some users appreciated the educational aspect of the initiative, while others debated whether such experiences can genuinely reflect the realities of prison life.

Conclusion

The launch of the “Feel the Jail” initiative by Hyderabad’s Chanchalguda Central Prison represents an innovative approach to public awareness and correctional education.
